Troubleshooting guide
LinkedIn link preview not showing?
LinkedIn builds a post’s link card from four Open Graph tags. If one is missing, the image is too small or LinkedIn can’t download it, the card loses its image or shows the wrong text. Here’s what to check, based on LinkedIn’s own requirements.
The check opens on the LinkedIn preview and flags missing tags and images smaller than 1200×630.
What LinkedIn needs
- Tags
og:title,og:image,og:descriptionandog:url- Image
- At least 1200×627, ratio 1.91:1, up to 5 MB
- Small images
- Under 401 px wide, shown as a thumbnail
- Refresh
- Post Inspector fetches the page again
Common causes and fixes
-
A required tag is missing
LinkedIn lists
og:title,og:image,og:descriptionandog:urlas the tags that must exist. Without them the card can show the wrong text or no image at all.Fix: Check your page to see which tags it has, then copy the generated code into your
<head>. -
The image is smaller than 1200×627
That’s LinkedIn’s minimum for the large card. Images under 401 px wide are shown as a small thumbnail beside the text.
Fix: Use a 1200×630 image. The OG image generator makes one in your browser.
-
The image is over 5 MB
LinkedIn’s maximum file size for the image is 5 MB. Uncompressed PNGs and camera photos can go over it.
Fix: Save the image as a JPG, which keeps a 1200×630 image well under the limit.
-
The image size isn’t declared
Developers report that without
og:image:widthandog:image:height, LinkedIn may skip the image when a link is first shared.Fix: Add both tags. Hey Meta’s generated code includes them when it can measure your image.
-
LinkedIn can’t download the image
LinkedIn notes that a site can block it from pulling the image, or that the image may sit in a protected directory. Bot protection that blocks
LinkedInBothas the same effect.Fix: Open the image address in a private window to confirm it’s public, and let LinkedInBot through your bot protection.
-
LinkedIn is showing an old version
LinkedIn keeps the preview it fetched earlier, so fixes don’t show up on their own right away.
Fix: Paste the address into Post Inspector, which fetches the page again.
Still seeing the old preview?
Paste your address into Post Inspector and run it. LinkedIn fetches the page again, and new posts use the updated card.
